No Pandering
And so it begins. For the next two weeks, we will be listening to people talk about the candidates. They will be trying to convince you that the candidates are something other than what they really are. They will tell you things from all over the map in the hopes that you’ll latch on to the one speech, one paragraph, or even one sentence that speaks to you and causes you to vote for their candidate. In some form or another, this will be two weeks of pandering.
That is politics. However, that is not how you share the Gospel. Do not ever believe that you have to package, spin, or “productize” Jesus. He is not some divisive idea that needs to be prettied up and staged to be sold.
He is truth.
“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’ ” John 14:6
“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32
” ‘You are a king, then!’ said Pilate.
Jesus answered, ‘You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.’ ” John 18:37
Jesus will not be repackaged, updated, or made over. Jesus is truth and those who seek truth will be drawn to Him.
Do not modify the Gospel to pander to the unsaved. Do not package Him so He is palatable to a variety of lifestyles. Do not market Him as adaptable to all philosophies. Declare the truth with love and grace.
God will take care of the rest.
