Unbeatable
As I dive in further to apologetics studies, I see my greatest fear crystallizing. My fear is that, in a straight up debate about my faith, I could look like a fool. I fear that there are very smart people making very good arguments about why I’m wrong. I don’t doubt that what I believe about Jesus Christ is incorrect, I just worry that my credibility could be damaged to the point that I’m no longer useful to my God. I could no loner be used to share the Gospel.
Then I read this:
“With his mouth the godless destroys his neighbor,
but through knowledge the righteous escape.” Proverbs 11:9
I see two different applications of this scripture. First, in my situation, it reminds me that the way to defend against incorrect arguments is with knowledge. The encouragement is that truth will always trump falsehood. The only question is whether one can gather enough truth for the debate. That just urges me on.
Secondly, I see this scripture describing those who are wobbly and beaten down by the godless. The arguments and philosophy and science hammers at them from all directions until they just aren’t so sure anymore. Once again, the solution is knowledge.
Whether you’re preparing for a philosophical battle or trying to rally yourself from a wobbly state, knowledge of the truth is the answer. And, where can you find that?
I’d start here:
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” Proverbs 9:10
Remember, truth is unbeatable. You just need to gather it and bring it to the fight.
