A daily dose of spiritual exercise for men in various stages of their Christian walk

I had great plans for my life and Jesus ruined them. Really. I had a vision that was full of beautiful, creative things and people. The plan was all-inclusive and not judgmental of anyone or anything. Once I let Him into my life, though, He started messing with everything! Carefree took on a whole new meaning and it had nothing to do with wide open thinking or behavior. I had to start being careful about everything. First, it was about hiding my personal plan while I acted like I was on other plan. Then, it was about justifying my plan while making excuses. Then, it was about examining my plan and casting aside some of it. Then, it was about putting the whole plan aside, but still taking it out once in a while to remember it fondly. Then, it was resenting the fact that Jesus didn’t like my plan. Then, it was about being angry at Jesus for allowing me to have a plan that He was going to reject.

I have come to grips with the fact that He is in charge and that He is much smarter than I am, but I would be lying if I did not say that when I see other people living out my plan, I see clearly how He ruined all I had planned. I have to admit that, if I could change the rules, I would. It’s my nature. The reality is that it is much more difficult to buy into a plan that isn’t always clear, but evidence and faith compel us to follow rather than to fill our days with our personal pursuits.

“Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.” Proverbs 19:21

“To man belong the plans of the heart, but from the Lord comes the reply of the tongue.” Proverbs 16:1

“When their spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans came to nothing.” Psalm 146:4

Be aware, men. Once you accept Jesus, He will probably ruin your plans.
