Best Laid Plans
I had the day off yesterday. I had great plans to get some work done on some personal software projects I have. I even considered getting up a little earlier than I normally do on a day off to get a head start. I was all revved up to make some significant progress.
I woke up later than usual. I remembered my wife had an eye exam appointment at the mall, so I decided to tag along and have lunch with her. After the appointment, we did a little shopping. After that, we decided to stop by the church to follow up on a question we had of one of the pastors. We ended up chatting and hanging out for about half an hour with various folks. On the way home, we remembered to stop by the grocery store to get some things for dinner. When we got home, I helped my son through his math homework and a physics lab. Since I was sitting at the table and it had been my payday, I figured I’d pay some bills. I noticed that our last bank statement was in the pile, so I reconciled that, too. At that moment it was time for dinner, so we ate and cleaned the dishes. Then we decided to squeeze in a TV show we had recorded followed by a quick walk to enjoy the night air. When we got back from the walk, my son asked me to join him playing some video games for a bit. Then I looked at the clock and noticed it was after ten.
Hmm. So much for my plans…
“Do not boast about tomorrow,
for you do not know what a day may bring forth.” Proverbs 27:1
“Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” James 4:13-14
Is there value in making plans? Sure. Just be prepared for God to lead you elsewhere. I’m not annoyed that my plans didn’t come to fruition. I think I made better connections and accomplished more important things today because I followed God’s lead. I’ll make some plans for tomorrow, but not only do I accept that God may redirect, I pray for it.
He always has the better plan.
