It’s an exasperating kind of question, but it’s not the questioner’s fault. I get annoyed when someone asks what I’m doing or what I’m working on when I know the answer will be long and complex and won’t be interesting to the questioner anyway. I feel like I have to put in the effort to try to summarize the situation only to have the person asking shrug and say, “Whatever”. It’s that same feeling when someone sits down next to you while you’re watching the last twenty minutes of a movie and asks, “So, what’s happened up ’til now?”

I realized that God has those same situations with us. He doesn’t get exasperated or annoyed. He just tells us that we’re not to know.

“The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of the law.” Deuteronomy 29:29

I liked this verse because it reminded me that I’m often asking God to explain something to me when He knows very well that the explanation would be over my head and wouldn’t satisfy me in any way. Silence from God can sometimes just be Him saying, “The answer wouldn’t help.”

But, even more, it reminds me that God has given us much to know and do already. I don’t have time to spend trying to guess at what He’s keeping secret. I need to focus on what He’s revealed so I can know those things, do those things, and teach those things to my son.

It’s like wanting to know what’s for dessert before finishing dinner. We have enough on our plate to keep us busy for quite a while.
