Wash Her
When I was first married, I thought my job as a husband was to provide the material things necessary for a good life. I worked hard to pay the rent, buy the food, and fill the car with gas. This is where many men get stuck.
Then, several years later, I began to understand that I needed to meet her emotional and relationship needs as well. Just because I was comfortable with our level of communication didn’t mean she was. I needed to go out of my way to meet her where she was and build the relationship. This is the pinnacle for most unsaved marriages.
Over the last couple of years, God has reminded me that I have a spiritual responsibility to her, too. No matter how well I think I’m doing in my walk with Christ, I’m dropping the ball if I’m not actively helping her in hers. This is the step I’m climbing now. It’s taking me a while, but the need to do so is now crystal clear:
“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word,” Ephesians 5:25-26
I already know that I would give my life for her. Now, I need to give her all I know about Jesus, too.
Men, if you have made it past the first two steps, don’t stop. You have a responsibility to encourage and assist in her spiritual growth. Doing what the rest of the world is doing isn’t good enough.
Wash her.
