Cool Gifts
As a youngster, I had my share of “must have” toys. For some reason, one sticks in my mind. It was a large, blue rifle-looking toy called “System 7″ (named as such because it had seven different features). It shot spinning disks and parachutes. It had a periscope and hidden compartments. It was cool. I actually got this as a gift and I was enthralled… for a few months. Like most of these toys, they were designed to entertain for a short period of time. They didn’t meet a deep need in my life, but only fed my desire for more cool stuff. In my cosmic priority list, this toy has moved waaay down. I didn’t know that then, but I do now.
That’s why I’m ever more thankful that God gives good gifts. He gives the gifts that are worthwhile and lasting. He doesn’t give the gifts that will distract us from His will or delay us along our path. I was reminded of these things as I read this today:
“Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our ‘God is a consuming fire.’” Hebrews 12:28-29
Not only is He giving us a kingdom, but an unshakeable one. It’s not just a cool gift, but one that will last!
God always gives us the coolest stuff.
