In the heady days of the dot com economic boom, money was being made by some quirky characters and created some unusual situations. I remember reading a list someone had created titled “You know you’re in a dot com when…” that included one item that sticks in my mind. You know you’re in a dot com when you eat dinner at the most expensive restaurant in town and out of a vending machine in the same week. It was true and I can actually claim to have experienced just that.
I’m reminded of that juxtaposition this time of year. On the one hand, I was able to enjoy a situation where very expensive food was being served to me by deferential waiters and waitresses who treated me like royalty. On the other hand, I was desperately trying to flatten my one dollar bill so the stupid vending machine would give me my package of peanut-butter crackers.
In the end, it doesn’t matter which situation I’m in now. It matters which situation I’ll be in later. I know the right Man to get a seat at the best table then:
“Then the angel said to me, “Write:’Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!’” And he added, ‘These are the true words of God.’ ” Revelation 19:9
I have much to be thankful for here on earth. But, even if I had nothing, I hope that I could be thankful for this thing that is much more important: I have reserved seating at the banquet in God’s house.
