Big Fun
Filed Under Devotional
I saw a story on the news the other night about a middle-aged man who was sledding with his family in his own neighborhood. He took a run down the hill and ended up crossing the street at the same time an SUV was driving through. It killed him. Now, does this tragedy prove that all sledding is evil and should be avoided? Of course not. It proves that a perfectly fun and safe activity can be deadly when the safety rules aren’t followed. An acceptable activity is perverted into a dangerous one when we ignore the boundaries.
Now, if instead of sledding, the activity in question was sex, the world’s view is very different. When someone decides to engage in that activity without the safety rules that God has prescribed, the results can be death, disease, and other damage both physical and mental. The world would tell you that God’s limitations restrict the fun. But of course, wearing a helmet and avoiding the road could be considered restricting the fun of sledding, too.
The world sees God’s laws as restrictive and narrow-minded. The world tells people that there’s more to life than what God outlines and He’s just keeping you from the real fun. (Notice that this sales pitch goes back to the Garden of Eden.) God, however, is not in the business of limiting our fun or being a cosmic killjoy. God wants you to have real joy and true peace. That’s what you get when you obey Him.
“Blessed are they whose ways are blameless,
who walk according to the law of the Lord.
Blessed are they who keep his statutes
and seek him with all their heart.” Psalm 119:1-2
Don’t be deceived by those telling you it’s more fun to bend the rules. Don’t be dejected by deciding to follow God, either. Pursue Him with vigor and passion.
“I rejoice in following your statutes
as one rejoices in great riches.
I meditate on your precepts
and consider your ways.
I delight in your decrees;
I will not neglect your word.” Psalm 119:14-16
Therein lies the most fun of all.
