A daily dose of spiritual exercise for men in various stages of their Christian walk

I had a minor missed opportunity tonight. Actually, it was more of a delayed opportunity. It was a situation where I could get a head start on something today or I’d have wait almost a week to try again. I missed it due to some external dependencies being a little slow. I was really annoyed, but I had to catch myself because I realize that time is in God’s control. He knows what’s going on.

I’m reminded of how the military is famous for having it’s soldiers hurry up and wait. That sounds like an oxymoron, but it has value. Soldiers are asked to do everything quickly and efficiently and be prepared for the next order. Sometimes, that means hurrying to finish a task only to wait to be told what the next one is. All together, this is an attitude of service and obedience which the military depends upon.

We are taught the same thing (I’m using the New King James here):

“See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.” Ephesians 5:15-16

Scripture tells us not to miss an opportunity to serve and obey our Lord. We should not waste time, but redeem it.

Contrast that with:

“For the vision is yet for an appointed time;
But at the end it will speak, and it will not lie.
Though it tarries, wait for it;
Because it will surely come,
It will not tarry.” Habakkuk 2:3

We are to be waiting expectantly for God’s leading. We are told specifically to “wait for it” because it “will surely come”.

Hurry up and wait. Be quick to serve and obey. Be ready to wait on His next direction.
