Yours and Mine
It’s an old joke that still gets play around my house. Whenever our son makes a bad decision, then he’s referred to as “your son”. When he scores some points, he’s “my son”. It’s a lighthearted ribbing that comes from our core desire to take credit for the victories and point fingers over the defeats. Of course, in almost all cases, it’s a mixture of many parties responsible for the victories and the defeats.
I say almost all cases because when it comes to good and evil, this seeming one-sidedness is true. Whenever something bad happens, it is likely our fault (or, at least the result of sin on someone’s part). Whenever something good happens, it’s from God:
“Do not be deceived, my dear brothers. Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” James 1:16-17
I like the lead-in to this passage. It’s so easy to deceive yourself into thinking you were the reason for a success. Give Him all the glory and just thank Him that you get to be part of the victory.
