Our Commission
When larger things in the world are going according to what I think is a good plan, I’m addicted to reading about it and cheering it on. When my team is playing well, I can’t get enough of the game summaries and opinion pieces. I want to know more detail and follow every twist and turn. When times are running against my ideas or against my favorite teams, I avoid it. It just upsets me and frustrates me so I find something else to read and watch.
When that happens, I’m reminded of where my real focus should be. Following politics or the NBA is fun and interesting, but it shouldn’t get in the way of our commission, which never changes:
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,” Matthew 28:19
So, I need to be working on spreading the Gospel. I’m then reminded that I need to be prepared:
“But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,” 1 Peter 3:15
I need to be ready to respond. I need to be able to give an answer to the inevitable question. I’m also reminded that I can’t sit on the bench for this. I can’t stand in the back and hope someone else takes the lead:
“For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and self-discipline.” 2 Timothy 1:7
Don’t let the good or bad times distract you from your commission. Share the Gospel. Be prepared to answer the question. Be bold, loving, gentle, respectful, and disciplined when you do.
You volunteered for God’s army. Get yourself prepared to be useful in the field.
