Be Evergreen
I’m a sucker for time-lapse video. Since I was a kid, I just loved watching time-lapse shots of buildings being constructed, traffic patterns, nature, and anything else. It just strikes me as cool to see things that normally take very long to happen all compressed down to something active and exciting.
Watching time-lapse of a stand of trees is interesting. In the spring and summer, there’s lots of green. The trees are full, the birds are having a good time, and it’s generally beautiful. As fall approaches, some of the trees start to change color. Still pretty, but you know the end of the cycle is near. In winter, the deciduous trees have lost all of their leaves and look like the skeletons of the bushy view many months previous.
But, now you can see that, in the middle of this stand, there are a few evergreens. These are like the sentries of trees. They don’t ever look any different. They are always gorgeous and just keep growing. As the other trees cycle through the seasons, the evergreens are consistent.
I thought of this idea when I read this:
“But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him. He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” Jeremiah 17:7-8
Imagine the trees coming and going as the seasons change and as the droughts come and go. And, yet, there’s this one tree that seems to always be green. The observer would want to know what’s different.
Do you stand out like that? Are you the one still standing and still producing fruit when everyone else has withered? Are you causing people to ask, “What’s he got that nobody else does?”
Send your roots deep. Don’t fear the heat. Be evergreen.
