A daily dose of spiritual exercise for men in various stages of their Christian walk

No Fear

As I was leaving high school, there was a popular T-shirt brand called “No Fear”. The slogans on the shirts were always about being that gutsy basketball player or the fearless football player. Some tried to be deep by telling kids to have “no fear” about grabbing life by the horns. They were everywhere, including my drawer. Like most fads, though, I outgrew it and moved on.

Those shirts popped into my head again when I read this:

“Praise the LORD.
Blessed is the man who fears the LORD,
who finds great delight in his commands.” Psalm 112:1

Of course, this is a different kind of fear. This is the respect and recognition of authority that we should bring to God. This is not about timidity and being afraid. In fact, it should lead us to just the opposite. Reading later in the same chapter and speaking of the man who fears the Lord:

“He will have no fear of bad news;
his heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD.

His heart is secure, he will have no fear;
in the end he will look in triumph on his foes.” Psalm 112:7-8

So, you could say that fearing the Lord means you will have no fear.

The T-shirts traded on the idea that if you believe in yourself enough, you can overcome fear. That’s good as far as it goes. You can overcome hurdles here and there by believing in yourself. But, the majority of life will be insurmountable without God. Bravely running into a brick wall won’t cause the wall to collapse.

If you really want to have no fear, follow Him. This is not about machismo. This is about confidence.

No fear.
