A daily dose of spiritual exercise for men in various stages of their Christian walk

I will admit to taking some offense at the idea that some commonly used tools are inherently evil and should be avoided. I’ve heard that about guns, TV, and the Internet. Some people believe that there is no such thing as a good use for these and so should be shunned and even outlawed.

I respectfully disagree. I believe all of those things to simply be tools that require discipline to use correctly. You should take gun safety classes and have a healthy respect for the power of a firearm before owning one. You should be aware of what your children are watching and you should guard your eyes and heart when you watch TV or surf the web. Guns overcame fascism and have fought back terror. TV and the Internet have provided vast improvements in communication, education, and entertainment. These things are only dangerous when used incorrectly or in ignorance. But, for some, it’s easier to avoid them than to learn about them.

God has something similar to say about the need to have wisdom with the Word:

“Like a lame man’s legs that hang limp
is a proverb in the mouth of a fool.” Proverbs 26:7

“Like a thornbush in a drunkard’s hand
is a proverb in the mouth of a fool.” Proverbs 26:9

So the wisdom of God is either useless or dangerous when wielded by the ignorant man. Neither is good.

“For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12

Furthermore, the word is a powerful tool that can expose failings, challenge misconceptions, and force a man to face his sin. That’s a lot of force to hold in the hand of someone without wisdom. You can either walk away or educate yourself. Walking away will lead you away from Christ. Doing neither is negligent.

You have been handed the Word. Don’t be an untrained swordsman.

Be prepared to use the Word rightly.
