A daily dose of spiritual exercise for men in various stages of their Christian walk

I passed a car with a back window that had quite a collection of caps in the back window. It was an impressive display of logos from a variety of companies.

It occurred to me that many Christians have a variety of caps in life and, depending on how we want to be perceived, we choose our cap for the occasion. It might be for our company or our favorite sports team, but we do want to make an unspoken statement when we choose one cap over another. I believe every Christian should have three specific caps in their collection and they should be well-worn from frequent use. The first should say “Planter”, the second should say “Waterer”, and third should say “Harvester”. We should be prepared to put on the cap that meets the situation.

As we strive to meet people’s needs, gain their friendship, and introduce the Gospel, we need to keep in mind that we are working in God’s field. We will not always be the person who is on the spot when someone makes a commitment to Jesus. Someone else may harvest after we plant or water.

“And He was saying, ‘The kingdom of God is like a man who casts seed upon the soil; and he goes to bed at night and gets up by day, and the seed sprouts and grows—how, he himself does not know.” Mark 4:26-27

“We urge you, brethren, admonish the unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with everyone.” 1 Thessalonians 5:14

“And He was saying to them, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.’ ” Luke 10:2

Spreading the word should be fun, not a chore. We plant a seed. We encourage people. And, when the natural spiritual conclusion happens, we are sometimes privileged to hear the prayer in person. God does all the work.
