A daily dose of spiritual exercise for men in various stages of their Christian walk

Can’t Lose

During a summer basketball camp, the coaches divided us kids up into three groups based on ability. They then broke each of those groups up into teams. So, each group was like a mini-league. They named them the NIT, NCAA, and NBA. If you felt you were good enough to move up to the next level, you had to challenge a player in the league above you to a game of one-on-one. If you won, you moved up and he moved down.

I had been placed in the NCAA tier, but, truthfully, I was in the lower half of that group in ability. So, when some hotshot freshman decided he wanted to move up from the lowest tier, he challenged me. He was a point guard. I played center and forward. He could handle the ball and shoot from the outside. I was a decent rebounder and could score in the paint. Needless to say, the situation didn’t bode well for me and I lost. I had to move down to the lowest tier.

There have been other times in my life when I’ve been on the edge and worried about being laid off, demoted, or otherwise pushed aside because I didn’t measure up. It’s nerve-wracking to worry about being knocked down a level and losing income, benefits, and the rest.

I love the fact that I don’t have to worry about losing my salvation. It’s not like I can fall off the wagon and my ticket to Heaven gets unpunched.

“I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand.” John 10:28-29

I can live in confidence that my salvation is something I am guaranteed.

I can’t lose!
