A daily dose of spiritual exercise for men in various stages of their Christian walk

“The father of a righteous man has great joy; he who has a wise son delights in him.” Proverbs 23:24

For most of my adult life I’ve been trying to live up to the “son” in this proverb and others like it. I’ve been learning what it means to be righteous and to be wise. I’m learning it has little to do with anything that comes out of me. Any righteousness or wisdom I display comes from God and I’m just allowing Him to work through me.

Nonetheless, I’ve wanted to be a man that would give my father joy and delight.

Tonight, much to my surprise, I realized that I’m now the “father” in this proverb. My son is approaching adulthood quickly and has already exhibited wisdom and righteousness that makes me proud.

I realize that the best way to show my father that I heard the call and followed Christ is to offer the evidence of my son doing the same. The message got through and I am joyful and delighted.
