Eyes on Him
We had a few dogs when I was growing up, but we never bothered to train them much. They knew their names and knew when it was time to eat or go for a walk, but that was about it. So, I’m always impressed with highly trained dogs.
The thing I notice about the well-trained ones is the complete focus on the master. They stare intently with muscles tensed so they can respond instantly to the command given. They also are so focused on completing the command, that they will often ignore dangers or apparent threats to complete the task. Dogs taught to fetch, will jump through windows or over gullies that they’d never consider jumping if they hadn’t been commanded to do so.
Is that the kind of focus you have in following Jesus?
” ‘Come,’ he said.
Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’ ” Matthew 14:29-30
Peter walked on water because Jesus told him to. It’s when he took his eyes off Jesus and noticed the dangers around him that he began to sink.
Our pastor recently recounted the story of King Jehoshaphat calling out to God to survive overwhelming odds. He knew he couldn’t do it alone. He ends his prayer like this:
“O our God, will you not judge them? For we have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon you.” 2 Chronicles 20:12
The only way they could survive was to keep their eyes on Him.
Where is your focus? Do you follow His command without wavering? Are your eyes on Jesus?
