A daily dose of spiritual exercise for men in various stages of their Christian walk
I’m exhausted. As I write this, I’m at the end of a long day. I’m a middle manager at my day job, so I spend most of my day taking direction from my boss and turning it into plans and organizing teams for those that I manage. I then take their questions back to my boss for clarification or changes of direction. So, I spend most of my time coordinating.
During the evening, I helped chaperone 150 high schoolers and 60 middle schoolers. We get them into their rooms for youth group. We guide them out of their rooms for snacks and food. We make sure they don’t wander off and don’t get into trouble during all of this. So, I help coordinate.
When I got home, I started thinking about a group outing I’ve been planning. I’m thinking about transportation, food, parking, and more. I’m coordinating.
I realized that I’ve been coordinating one thing or another all day long and I’m beat. When I get tired, I start to compromise. Maybe I don’t have time to find the best solution, but I find one that’s good enough. Maybe I don’t think through the implications for everyone, but I make sure my particular goals are met. Then, when I’m really at the end of my rope, I’m more concerned about just making sure it doesn’t blow up in my face. I’ll say or agree to anything as long as it promises to get the project to completion.
Over the long run, that’s a dangerous way to run things. Fortunately, I get breaks and time to rest between projects. I also have other people at work or in my life to act as a check to keep me honest. But it’s clear that it’s not something I can do continuously or alone.
I think I’ve gained a deeper respect for what God is doing in our lives. He is coordinating everything for the good of all who believe.
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28
He is coordinating every detail, every implication, and every changed path. He is not compromised by weariness or selfishness or limited by what He can know. He is coordinating perfectly according to His perfect will.
“In him we were chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will,” Ephesians 1:11
Does this mean that everything that happens is what God wants? No. But, His will cannot be denied. He will coordinate it all to bring about His will.
Take comfort in knowing that we can’t screw up the plan. Take notice in knowing that there is a plan that you should be abiding.
