I was watching two games tonight. I watched an NBA playoff game that saw the winning team win a trip to The Finals. I also watched my favorite baseball team mount an exciting come-from-behind victory in ten innings. Even better, the crucial home run was hit by a player on my fantasy baseball team! I was rooting for both of the winners tonight, so it was both fun to watch and left me feeling good.
In the case of both teams, I was somewhat invested in their performance. It’s not that it will have any direct effect on me other than the fact that I enjoy seeing them win and it could improve the performance of my fantasy baseball team. Still, being just a bit invested made me follow the games a little more closely. I cheered when my teams scored or made a great play. I groused when their opponents did.
It’s amazing how naturally I become involved when I have even the slightest investment in the outcome.
That’s why I wonder about Christians who have no desire to learn more about Christ or the things of the Kingdom of Heaven. They like the sound of having their debt paid, but otherwise they have more important things to do.
I like how Jesus put it:
“But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there you heart will be also.” Matthew 6:20-21
Your heart will be drawn to and interested in where you’ve placed your treasure. Imagine a roulette wheel. If you bet on number 20, you’d be very interested to see if the ball fell on 20. If it didn’t, you wouldn’t really care what number it did fall on. You’d be focused on where your treasure is.
So, is your treasure in Heaven? Is it with Christ? If you find that you have no interest in Him or where we’re going, you may want to re-evaluate your situation. When your treasure is in Heaven, you become less interested in treasure here and more interested in the things of Heaven.
Step back and do a little self-analysis. Where is your treasure?
Is it time to reinvest?
