A daily dose of spiritual exercise for men in various stages of their Christian walk

For Our Time

The movie genres of “chick flick” and “sci-fi” rarely intersect. One movie that was clearly a love story and had a little sci-fi in it was “Somewhere in Time” with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. The premise is that a modern day man uses mind over matter to transport himself backward in time. He meets his soulmate in that time period and begins to fall in love. The climax of the movie is when he happens to pull a penny out of his pocket that has the year 1979 on it. This anachronism breaks his mentally-induced time travel and he returns to his own time leaving his true love behind.

I tell you this story only to point out that anachronisms are not always minor or unintentional. Sometimes they are the crux of the matter.

I’m realizing that the Word seems to be filled with anachronisms. There is so much Scripture that seems like it could not have been written more apropos for the current time. It’s amazing.

This one hit me square in the face today:

“Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.” James 1:21

Wow. I can’t think of a time when moral filth and evil seems so prevalent! It is literally everywhere, including in the electronic media and cyberspace where it leaks into our daily lives. You simply cannot avoid it completely without becoming a hermit.

It is not some proud action to turn away from the world. It is an act of humility because we are admitting that only God has what we need.

I love how the Word applies to real life. This verse is but one of many, but the message is spot on.

Accept the Word. Stay separate from the world. Be humble.

A message for our time.
