A daily dose of spiritual exercise for men in various stages of their Christian walk

Never Wrong

I have mentioned before that I can get pretty wound up about political issues. Of all the commentators and politicians out there, there are some I like and trust, some that have a good idea now and then, and some that I have learned to look at skeptically all the time. I love having my favorite brains back me up when they’re on the money, but I realize that if I tie myself too much to these people, they will let me down.

The danger with becoming a cheerleader for a political lightning rod is that he or she can be wrong. When an opponent finds a chink in the armor, it becomes great leverage for arguing that nothing can be trusted. It’s no fun being on the wrong end of that argument when you know it’s a valid challenge. It’s a weak response to say, “Sure, he got that wrong, but he’s right on everything else.”

When I find myself in those situations, I become all the more grateful for the Scripture.

“He who is the Glory of Israel does not lie or change his mind; for he is not a man, that he should change his mind.” 1 Samuel 15:29

“The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple.” Psalm 19:7

“For the word of the LORD is right and true; he is faithful in all he does.” Psalm 33:4

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” Matthew 7:24

The Word is true, trustworthy, faithful, and dependable. I never have to worry about the Word being proven wrong. I never have to worry about it contradicting itself. It will never fail.

I am reminded regularly that other people will let you down, but He and His Word never will. I’m glad I have that to lean on.
