A daily dose of spiritual exercise for men in various stages of their Christian walk

Good Fences

As a kid, security ropes, safety fences, and guard rails all seemed like overbearing forces disrupting my ability to have fun. What if I want to climb that cliff? What if I want to see huge grinder up close? What if I want to see how the car drives in the gravel on the shoulder? As kids, we act as if we have all of the information and can rightly decide if our idea is a good one.

As an adult, I see a security rope or safety fence and think it must be there for a reason. There must be some danger or restriction that I am unaware of that I’m being protected from. Instead of seeing them as restrictions on my fun, I see them as protections to keep me safe from the unknown consequences.

A friend of mine made the point that when God says “Don’t”, what He means is “Don’t hurt yourself”. God’s restrictions are for safety purposes.

“I will never forget your precepts, for by them you have preserved my life.” Psalm 119:63

Don’t hop the rope or climb the fence. There’s far more adventure on the path He has marked out.
