Spiritual Nutrition

It’s been downright hot around my house lately. We’re going to break a record for consecutive days over 100 degrees. It’s as hot as I’ve ever experienced in this part of the country.
Of course, during this time, the news is constantly running stories about how to stay cool, stay safe, and stay healthy. The one I hear over and over is how to stay hydrated. The reporters always make the point that by the time you are sweating and feeling thirsty, you are already headed the wrong way and it’s harder to catch up. The right thing to do is to just keep drinking water so you never get to that point.
It occurred to me that living in a fallen world works similarly. By the time you realize you’re drifting away from God, you’re already in trouble. The trick is to feed yourself the Word on a daily basis to stay ahead of the curve and avoid getting into spiritual danger.
“He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.” Deuteronomy 8:3
“I am the bread of life. Your forefathers ate manna in the desert, yet they died. But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which a man may eat and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.” John 6:48-50
“Jesus answered, ‘Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.’” John 4:13-14
It would seem that we need to be filling our bodies with something different to avoid the dangers of the world.
