A daily dose of spiritual exercise for men in various stages of their Christian walk

Good Rest

Filed Under Devotional

It was through many days of forced labor under my father that I began to learn the good feeling of hard work well done. I could appreciate the accomplishment of a day of yard work. I enjoyed the feeling of building a deck or porch or remodeling a bedroom. Resting after a day like that is gratifying. You don’t feel lazy or undeserving of rest. You enjoy relaxing that much more because of the effort you’d put out earlier.

The spiritual work you do can have the same kind of feeling. If you’re doing work for God, you can find a satisfying rest, too.

“Find rest, O my soul, in God alone;
my hope comes from him.

He alone is my rock and my salvation;
he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.” Psalm 62:5-6

“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” Psalm 91:1

The results of your efforts depend on where you’re coming from. Where do you dwell? Where is your home base? Is it God? If not, you’ll find yourself frustrated and rest will be hard to come by. If so, you will find your spiritual work satisfying and you will find a good rest.
