Basically
We have all heard this: “I’m basically a good person.” This response usually comes when a discussion hits a wall and someone admits he is not perfect but still rejects the need for a savior. The thinking goes, “After all, God won’t condemn everyone, so exclusion can’t be based on sin since everyone engages in sin.” There was a time in history when being a basically good person was the best you could be:
“Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’
God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” Genesis 1:26-27
That’s it: the basic man who was basically good. When sin entered the world, it killed man, basic as he was.
“but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.” Genesis 2:17
Well, guess what? He died! And, from that moment on, there were no “basically good people” on the earth, just varying degrees of sinners that all need to be saved. Dead is dead. It’s not kinda dead or sorta dead, but basically dead!
