A daily dose of spiritual exercise for men in various stages of their Christian walk

I’ve heard the argument that the US Constitution is a living document. This is defended by the idea that the Framers could never have known about the technology and society we have today and, so, they could never have meant for us to strictly abide by their rules. Surely, they would have written in exceptions and made changes if they had known what the world would look like 200 years later. The justification goes that since we have a clearer picture of what works and what doesn’t, we should just bend the document to go with what fits today. We’ll just agree to fudge this amendment and puff up that one to fit better. The document needs to live and adapt to fit our situation.

I happen to disagree with this idea, but the one nugget of truth in there is that this is a document created by men and, so, it does have flaws. I’m not sure that the flaws require such drastic repairs, but that’s another story.

How do those who argue for living, breathing documents argue about the Word of God? How do they argue against unassailable truth?

Jeremiah was hearing from God regarding the Jews, but these verses sure rang a bell for me:

“From the least to the greatest,
all are greedy for gain;
prophets and priests alike,
all practice deceit.

They dress the wound of my people
as though it were not serious.
‘Peace, peace,’ they say,
when there is no peace.

Are they ashamed of their loathsome conduct?
No, they have no shame at all;
they do not even know how to blush.
So they will fall among the fallen;
they will be brought down when I punish them,”
says the LORD.” Jeremiah 6:13-15

The greatest danger to the truth is not someone tearing it down or disproving it, but simple deceit. The truth cannot be moved or destroyed, so the enemy simply diverts people from finding it.

God does not appreciate deceit. God does not excuse brazen disobedience. He will happily grant forgiveness to all that ask for it, but those who don’t are already living under condemnation.

You cannot attack the truthfulness of truth itself. You cannot argue away the validity of God and His Word. Those who attempt to mislead that they’ve done just that don’t appear to hold much favor in God’s eyes.

Don’t divert others and don’t allow yourselves to be diverted.
