A daily dose of spiritual exercise for men in various stages of their Christian walk

A man remembers many things in his life, but none more than those times when the ones he loves are very happy or when they are very saddened. As you grow older, you have many more reference points than the young folks do and, perhaps, it makes it easier to realize that these moments will come and go.

I believe the saddest of times is when you see someone you love with a broken spirit and there isn’t anything you can do about it. I am waiting here for my neighbor to come over and take me to the vet where I will watch someone put down a favorite pet. She is at that point where it is a struggle to stay alive and it is the humane thing to do. However, setting my own feelings aside, I watched my wife say goodbye to her before she left for work. Her spirit was broken and I was in a state of helplessness.

I can make a decision to relieve our little dog’s suffering, but I am powerless to remove the sadness for my wife. She is brokenhearted, as am I, and I want to spare her the pain. There is nothing to say or do but to support her in her grief.

“There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven—
A time to give birth and a time to die;
A time to plant and a time to uproot what is planted.
A time to kill and a time to heal;
A time to tear down and a time to build up.
A time to weep and a time to laugh;
A time to mourn and a time to dance.” Ecclesiastes 3:1-4

This is why we know love is real… from time to time, it is painful.
