The Right Master
From the outside, it can appear contradictory for me to argue for two ideas that I consider to be important. First, I would argue that man needs to submit himself to serving Jesus to find true joy and fulfillment. Furthermore, without submitting himself, man condemns himself to Hell. Secondly, I would also argue that human governments should be small and nonintrusive. They should stay out of the way and out of the lives of people. They should provide for national security and public safety and not much more.
It sounds like I’m arguing for both servitude and freedom. I am, but the Master I recommend you serve and the master I argue against are two different entities. I want to serve the perfect and omniscient Creator. I will speak out and vote against the master that mistakenly thinks it has those same qualities.
The big lie for humanity is that by escaping servitude to Christ, you are free. I like how God said it to Jeremiah when Israel continued to rebel:
“Therefore, this is what the LORD says: You have not obeyed me; you have not proclaimed freedom for your fellow countrymen. So I now proclaim ‘freedom’ for you, declares the LORD-’freedom’ to fall by the sword, plague and famine. I will make you abhorrent to all the kingdoms of the earth.” Jeremiah 34:17
The point He’s making is that the kind of freedom we think we want is the worst possible thing that could happen to us. The least loving thing He could do would be to remove His protection and let us run wild. We become carried away with our bent nature and drive ourselves into the weeds of sin.
I have no problem serving a loving God who controls everything. I have a very hard time serving other men who are often much less interested in God’s will than I am.
So, I proudly declare that human beings should serve no master as they serve the Master.
