Why are there so many denominations in the Christian faith? Just what the heck happened? There are many scholarly works to explain the flow charts about who came from where. However, the history according to Allen pretty much boils down to: “Once you start something, everybody jumps on board.”
When Martin Luther reportedly spent six hours in the confessional, he came to the conclusion that things were not right. The good Martin then composed 95 reasons, or theses, as to how the Roman Catholic church had screwed up his relationship with God. He nailed these reasons to the door of the church and the Protestant movement was born. This is the point where people start jumping on board. That is to say: change is good.
Now, because of sprinkling versus dunking, musical instruments versus a cappella, and a host of other reasons that people can’t agree, we now have a cornucopia of pews where we can plant our bottoms. I don’t spend a lot of time focused on some of these issues, although I do recognize the importance they hold for many people. I draw the line at changing Scripture and adding players. These are different arguments. My view is that God seems pretty focused on the meat of the relationship, not the nuance. What makes a brother or sister in Christ?
“Nevertheless, the firm foundation of God stands, having this seal, ‘The Lord knows those who are His,’ and, ‘Everyone who names the name of the Lord is to abstain from wickedness.’ ” 2 Timothy 2:19
Simple. I like simple.
