A daily dose of spiritual exercise for men in various stages of their Christian walk

Thrill Ride

Why do you climb the mountain? Because it’s there.

This trite response actually encapsulates a profound statement about human motivation. We are not meant to be aimless creatures living lives without meaning. We are meant to have purpose and to have challenges along the way. The problem is that sometimes the challenges look too big. Even though we’d really like to climb that mountain, it just looks too hard and we might get hurt, so we choose to sit at the bottom. If the plan was to climb the mountain alone, then perhaps it is safer to stay in the lowlands. But, if you plan to get some help, it’s a challenge with a guaranteed ending.

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.” Matthew 7:7-8

If we are climbing the mountains according to God’s plan and with Him at our side, we know in advance that we will be victorious. There is no excuse to hang out at base camp.

Does that mean that there’s no adventure? Does knowing you’ll succeed take the challenge out of it?

Hardly. Following Jesus is still the thrill ride of all time.
