Nature abhors a vacuum. Whenever all matter is removed from a space, the matter nearby will tend to replace it. There is all kinds of interesting science involved in studying this natural law, but there is no doubt that it is true. Often, when attempting to remove an offending substance from a space, it is much easier and more reliable to simply force a clean or inert substance into the space that pushes the other out. This is how your radiator is flushed, how hydraulic lines are cleaned, and how noxious fumes are ventilated from enclosed spaces.

I find that this law applies to our minds as well. If I attempt to completely empty my mind, something else will fill it. In fact, it is very difficult to eliminate a thought by focusing on it since the very act keeps the thought around. I find that the best way to clean out unwanted thoughts is to instead spend time focusing on righteous and commendable thoughts until there is no room for anything else.

“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” Philippians 4:8

Do not attempt to empty your mind. Fill it with the things of God and there will be no room for the alternatives.
