The last day of what? Some have claimed it is a reference to the last day of the current church rage. But that is a relatively new idea that became popular in the early twentieth century – about 100 years ago. Earlier Christians understood this more literally – the last time the sun would appear in this sky on this planet. This latter interoperation fits will with Revelation 20:5 “The rest of the dead will not rise until the thousand years are over.” A new heaven and a new earth appear then at the end of the millennium, making that day truly the last day.

This is one reason why I no longer believe in a pre-tribulation rapture. Interpreting the Bible literally is more possible if I let go of that belief and focus on what each verse is literally saying in context. A few problems remain, such as “How can the beheaded souls reign with Christ for 1000 years, if Christ does not return until the 1000 years are over?” (Revelation 20)
