It's not an all- the-time thing, though, just every two years when the rhetoric really gets cranked up and you get glimpses of of the true colors behind so many red and blue ties. I am addicted to reading about polls, speeches, debates, and whatever else I can find during these last days. I've had election nights where I've held my head in my hands and wondered what the country was thinking. I've had other ones where I've cheered and had a spring in my step the next day. One thing I have never done, however, is advocate resisting or breaking the law just because someone I don't like is calling the shots. That tends not to be a problem in this country, although I'm hearing more of that kind of talk all the time from some quarters. The idea that you don't have to follow the leader you didn't vote for seems somewhat silly. As citizens of a republic, we have agreed to place those who have gathered a majority of votes into a leadership position. I may disagree with him or her, but I will continue to advocate peacefully for my point of view. In other parts of the world, disagreeing with an elected leader seems to mean you can not only ignore the laws and government they represent, but you are also allowed to start randomly killing people until you get your way. Those folks claim to be following their faith. I'm not so sure that's their real reason. I can say, though, that the reason I choose to peacefully submit to authority is because that's what Christ has directed: "Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God." Romans 13:1 I can talk and write and wave my arms, but when the votes are all counted, I need to submit to the authority. Now, that does not mean I have to stop talking about what's important. I don't have to agree with everything that authority says, but I do have to obey the laws (as long as they don't force me into sin). So, my encouragement for those of you who are junkies like me is to remember who's in charge. We may get the person we want in the Governor's mansion or the White House or we may get the person we really dislike. But, at the end of the day, God is the ultimate authority and, thankfully, we don't get to elect God. He just is. He has a hand in directing elections just like anything else. If you submit to God, you have to submit to His choices as well. When you do stumble, he'll be there to celebrate. Just depend on Christ. When people cry "hypocrite", they have made a bad assumption. They assume that Christians are portraying themselves as perfect. We aren't perfect, just forgiven. We don't use the Gospel as a fist to beat people over the head, we use it as an open hand showing them the path to eternal life. We use it as a guide to direct our life, our decisions, and our opinions. Don't fall into the trap of trying to defend your holiness. We are only holy because God is in us. If we stumble, we stumble. Repent, don't deny. We are still flesh and sin is quite easy. Praise God that He never stops forgiving: "Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. It was very Hollywood and full of action. However, in one scene (it might have been the final scene), the team gets all the bad guys and makes a narrow escape off the beach and out into the ocean to be extracted. The only problem is that there is nobody there to pick them up. The camera pans back until this small team of guys is just a group of little dots in a very wide expanse of flat ocean. They seem very insignificant. The final line in the scene is, "So, should we wait or what?" I often feel that way, like I'm a dot in a wide expanse of the white noise of the world and I have to ask God the same question. "Lord, should I wait or what?" "In the morning, O Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation." Psalm 5:3 "Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord." During this time of the year, you get to hear them all with lots of spin. They are all being sold as the best thing for your life and that's why you should vote a certain way. There are those who will argue that government should simply get out of the way and let free markets and the skills of the citizenry make society thrive. There are those who think that the government should be compassionate and provide a helping hand to anyone who might need it. In fact, these folks will even suggest that people can be helped as infants and preschoolers all the way through to retirement and the golden years. That point of view can be classified as a "cradle to grave" approach to government. The need to support people at every stage of life. "Listen to me, O house of Jacob, all you who remain of the house of Israel, you whom I have upheld since you were conceived, and have carried since your birth. Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you." Isaiah 46:3-4 Ah! God takes the "cradle to grave" approach. Of course, He gives us supernatural support and can provide for us and save us like nobody else can. I wouldn't misinterpret His love for us as an endorsement to an involved government. In fact, God provides even more: "In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am." John 14:2-3 God is providing us with all that we need here and with a path to eternal life. He's providing all that we need there, too. I guess that qualifies as "cradle to grave...and beyond". All of these people have been placed in authority according to God's will and need His guidance. It's the ones who want to ignore His guidance that drive me nuts, but that's really not my point. I believe we have a dual responsibility in regards to our government. First, we happen to live in a country where we get to vote. In too many places around the world, the will of the people is ignored and suppressed. Here, it is not. God has chosen to give us the ability to affect our society and how it is governed. We also have the wisdom granted by God to see His will and understand better how life was designed to work. A friend of mine pointed out how the intersection of these two ideas really drives us as Christians to be responsible voters. As such, I believe we have a responsibility to exercise our right to vote not only as a way of expressing our beliefs, but as an act of love for our fellow citizens. We should want them to have a better life, too, so we should vote to make it so. Secondly, we have a responsibility to provide spiritual support to our leaders. "I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone- for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness." 1 Timothy 2:1-2 Love your neighbor by doing what you can to make society better for everyone. The word is "discourage" and I must say that I have fought with this word many times in my life. Last night, however, when it came knocking, I realized that it is only a word that has been tainted. Three little letters turn a beautiful word into a dark word. The concept that we must rejoice in challenges because they build character does not include discouragement. It does include courage. How can a courageous man ever show his stuff without the opportunity to be discouraged? It is the same with the way God works in our lives. He shows His love when we have the opportunity to become discouraged. That is when He shows up and we really notice Him. So, let me encourage you to always remember this verse: "The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged." If I plan, things go more smoothly. If I pay attention, I learn quickly. By the same token, if I work hard, I earn good money. If I take care of my car, it continues to run. If I research a new software technology, I am more productive at work. These are all examples of how a payoff is based on the investment of time and effort. The fact is that there's always an effect from what you do or don't do. When you put in the right effort, the effect is good. When you slack off, neglect, or avoid the effort, the effect is less than expected or even bad. If I exercise, I stay healthy. If I drink and smoke, I don't. This law works spiritually, too. You cannot expect to live one way and then reap the results of your choice. God laid it out pretty clearly in Jeremiah: " 'Will you steal and murder, commit adultery and perjury, burn incense to Baal and follow other gods you have not known, and then come and stand before me in this house, which bears my Name, and say, "We are safe"-safe to do all these detestable things? Has this house, which bears my Name, become a den of robbers to you? But I have been watching! declares the Lord." Jeremiah 7:9-11 I don't know about you, but this seems to be precisely the message our society is selling. Do whatever you want. It doesn't matter, God loves you enough that he'll take you anyway as long as you meant well. Sure, God will save you from Hell. You will get to spend eternity with Him. Salvation does not remove the earthly effects of your earthly activities, though. If you engaged in risky behavior, you may still pay the price for that. If you committed a crime, you will still go to jail. It's the folks who try to laugh behind God's back, though, that amaze me. They really think He doesn't notice. "Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life." Galatians 6:7-8 That's as much a warning to us as it is to those who don't know Him. There are rules in play. It's good that we try to teach them to others, but we need to obey them ourselves, too. Diversify your investments. Find a tax-free shelter to avoid higher rates. These are all classic rules used to invest what you have to get a return over and above the original amount. Capitalism is based on the idea that with an investment of money, time, effort, and a good idea, someone can increase the value of the investment. In the process, that person is producing a product that other people want and, at some point, maybe even providing a job for someone else. It's a great economic system that makes our country incredibly wealthy. Now, charity in this country only happens for two reasons: One, because the giver is simply generous and is really willing to share the bounty. Or, they just want the tax write-off. In a purely numerical sense, charity doesn't make sense. It's the giving away of assets for no material return. In another great example of how God's law turns man's law on its head, God's law of economics contradicts this logical result. Under God's law, charity makes all kinds of sense: "One man gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed." Proverbs 11:24-25 "Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." Luke 6:38 This is a law that defies math or logic. But, that's not new with God. I recommend all of those investment rules I mentioned above. When I took my eye off of the purpose, then I could become discouraged. I got discouraged because I lost enthusiasm for my goal. I find that to be true in life, also. I forget what I am about. They were pointing out how great they thought the coach was for giving one of his players a second chance. The player in question had just made a boneheaded move by shooting his mouth off to an opponent in front of the referee. The penalty caused this player's team to move fifteen yards back when they were very close to scoring. The cameras showed the coach chewing the player out mightily. He even yanked him back to the sideline when the player thought he should be going back in. Just when you thought the player in question would be riding the pines for the rest of the afternoon, the coach did something impressive. He called this player's number and gave him a shot at the touchdown. This showed great wisdom on the part of the coach. He knew that having this player do well was a much better outcome for the team. But, at the same time, the coach knew the player needed some discipline (hence the verbal barrage and being kept out of the next play). In the end, the coach wanted the player to do well, but he knew the player needed some discipline and a second chance. I love that God is the best coach around. No matter how many times I screw up, He picks me up, teaches me a new lesson, and sends me into the game again. As long as I'm willing to play under His guidance, He'll call a play for me now and then. When I decide that I don't want to play by His rules, He'll bench me until I change my mind. In the end, He wants what is best for us and wants us to be successful. Rahab had been a prostitute, but God gave her a second chance. Jonah literally tried to run from God, but God gave him a second chance. David got wrapped up in adultery and what was essentially contract murder, and yet God gave him a second chance. Paul had been persecuting the very people that followed Jesus and God gave him a second chance. "If you, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness; therefore you are feared." Psalm 130:3-4 When you blow it, just get back in the game. Listen carefully to the discipline and instruction. Adjust your game plan. Go battle hard for Him again. If you do all that, He will call your number again. The story goes that the guy you didn't want to meet in the dark woods would follow your trail and attempt to catch up to you. He was too slow to overtake you, though, so he would whistle. The trick was that he had the ability to make his whistle sound like it came from somewhere else. This guy would whistle such that it sounded like it was coming directly in front of you. This would cause you to turn around in fear and unknowingly head right towards him. Aside from creeping me out for a few years, this story does carry an important lesson. When you decide to change direction out of fear, frustration, disappointment, anger, or whatever, make sure you know where you are headed. Pay close attention to where the trouble is coming from and make sure you aren't headed directly at the source. I find that it's too common and far too easy to panic in these moments and let our human emotions and human logic take over. That usually results in changing direction directly away from the very place you should be headed. When life is beating you up, it doesn't make sense to flee God. And yet, how many times have we seen people do just that. They shake their fist at the sky and blame God for their troubles when they should be praying for His help. I know my habit when trouble comes is to think harder, work harder, and try harder. Those are great, but I usually forget to pray harder. In fact, I'll be doing the other things so much, I may pray less. I might as well be headed directly towards my enemy. That just accelerates my troubles. "Trouble and distress have come upon me, but your commands are my delight." Psalm 119:143 Listen carefully to where the trouble is coming from. Listen more carefully to where the help is coming from. Aside from the fact that we were on a party line and everyone on the line could listen to your conversations, we were always excited to hear from someone. Now, we have Caller ID and that allows us to screen our calls before we pick up the phone. I believe there is an analogy between Caller ID and our conscience. When God rings our number because of the way we have been living our lives, we are not very eager to pick up the phone. This brings us to another comparison: voice messaging. You see, in the old days, the darn phone would just keep ringing until someone hollered, "Will someone PLEASE answer the #$%! phone?" In my case, my conscience works like the old days. God calls and He doesn't stop ringing until I pick up. When I do, it feels like the whole world is listening. The answer, of course, is to not lead your life in such a manner that God decides to make such a call. Instead, when you feel you are headed in the wrong direction, you pick up the phone. "And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name." Acts 22:16 Number please. I felt so frustrated with questions where "there is no wrong answer". I wanted there to be a right answer and a clear, learnable way to find that answer. I liked algebra, trigonometry, calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, and all of the stuff in between because each problem had a right answer and a way to find it. Now, I spend my days writing code to tell computers what to do and then using logical analysis to find out where I went wrong. Think about that for a second. It never crosses my mind to blame the computer when the software doesn't work. When the computer doesn't do what I want it to do, I would love to blame it on some other software or some hardware glitch. 99.9 percent of the time, though, it's me. It's the code I wrote that's doing exactly what I told it to do, but not exactly what I wanted. I can never sit back, cross my arms, and declare that the computer is simply following my code incorrectly and I'm just going to wait until it figures that out. No, I have to start from the assumption that I screwed up. Isn't it amazing how many people try to pull that stunt with God? When things don't go the way they planned, they would prefer to redefine reality rather than admit their own culpability. "Nah, I did the right thing. God just isn't doing His part." or "The God I believe in wouldn't condemn my behavior. So, I'll continue and wait for my God to fix the problems." This is just ridiculous. What made this trip more interesting was the car in front of me. It was a pickup that had been modified to carry custom equipment for this guy's particular profession. After looking over the equipment for a few minutes, I finally figured out what he did. He installed gutters. I found his truck interesting because he didn't have stacks of stock size gutters in the back. He had a roll of flat aluminum. That roll fed into a machine that bent the sheet of aluminum to form the gutter and had a large hand bar on one side to cut it. I realized that he didn't order a whole stack of presized gutters only to have to cut them to size on site. He would go to a house, measure how much he needed and create a length of gutter that was the exact size. There's much less waste that way and the gutters probably looked better on the house when they are custom cut. My preconceived notion about what a gutter installer would do only proved that I knew very little about the process. It also reminded me of how we are specially selected for each job God has in mind. Despite what the world would have you believe, there is no such thing as cookie cutter Christians. We are not all the same. We do not all have the same abilities, the same desires, or even the same relationship with Christ. "The body is a unit, thought it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, the form one body. Humor is not always frivolous. It can be educational, too. So a guy decides to stick it out at his home despite the fact that the town is evacuating because of flooding. He fills sandbags to put around the doors and starts to move his valuables to the upper floor. As the water rises and eventually begins to overflow the sandbags, he realizes that he's in trouble. He prays like he's never prayed before for God to save him. The water continues to rise until his neighbors come by in a raft offering to get him to safety. "No thanks! God is going to save me!" A little while later when the water has moved up the stairs on the first floor, the police come by in a motor boat offering to help him out. "No thanks, guys. God is going to save me!" Eventually, the water has forced this guy out on to his roof and a helicopter flies over and drops a ladder. He calls up, "Don't worry about me. God is going to save me!" Finally, the water gets too high and sweeps the guy away and he drowns. When he gets to heaven he asks God, "What happened? I thought you were going to save me." God answers with an exasperated sigh, "What did you want? I sent you two boats and helicopter!" After the chuckle, listeners should also pick up on the idea that God doesn't always send thunder and lightning and an angel on a cloud to answer your prayer. Usually, he sends normal people at the right time and right place. It's easy to overlook them if you're looking for special effects and awe-inspiring moments. I imagine God being exasperated when I read this passage in Jeremiah: "From the time your forefathers left Egypt until now, day after day, again and again I sent you my servants the prophets. But they did not listen to me or pay attention. They were stiff-necked and did more evil than their forefathers." Jeremiah 7:25-26 You can almost hear God saying, "What do you want? I'm sending you people who are speaking My words. I am telling you exactly what to do." They didn't believe these prophets because they didn't want to. They would have only been impressed with thunder and lightning. They didn't listen to the normal looking guy who was by himself and saying things that nobody else said. Even though they knew in their hearts that the lone voice was telling the truth. Are you ignoring the apparently mundane and normal things in your life that my very well be answers to prayer or even corrections from God? Are you waiting for thunder and lightning, or are you willing to listen when the guy at the gas station says something that makes you think? Be ready to hear from God. Don't deny it when you do. On the other, it's just a modern version of hand to hand combat...with less blood. You see, in a proper debate, one person will fail miserably if they lie or misdirect or resort to name- calling. In physical combat, you only have real strengths and skills. You cannot hide behind fake ones. This is why current political and cultural discourse is profoundly frustrating to me. Every time I've seen real debates held on the topics of the day, the truth becomes clear. But, what we see on TV and in the newspaper is not real debate. It's all hand-waving and misdirection. It's fake. I'm a logical guy, so that drives me mad. I love to have honest debates about my faith. It's not because I have all the answers. It's because I know I'm arguing from a position of truth. If I cannot respond, then I know there's an answer in the Word. When debating from a position that is less tenuous, you run the risk of not having an answer. Your opponent may make a point that is just true and there's no getting around that. I take comfort in knowing that's not a problem for my faith. God has an answer to all those who argue against Him. The best part will be when the debate closes. Those arguing against Him will run out of counterpoints. They won't have any alternatives to offer. They'll just have to accept the truth. On the one hand, we have the image of a multi-generational family around the table sharing a feast. It's an image that suggests tradition, the importance of family, and the power of love over whatever the world throws at you today. On the other hand, we have the image of slightly insane people in big coats with umbrellas lining up outside of Wal-Mart at 6 am for the chance to get a great price on a plasma television. We are told how retail businesses pull out all the stops to make money on the day after Thanksgiving by providing great prices on a few things in an attempt to get buyers in the store where they'll buy more things. It's an image of people being easily controlled by the idea of cheap stuff. The first image is flattering and the one we like to think of about ourselves. The second one is the one we like to laugh at. Chances are we're somewhere in between. There are dueling images of Christians as well. There's the image of a missionary bringing food to the hungry or helping to build a school somewhere in Africa. It's an image of the faithful who follow Jesus and live a pure life. There's also the image out there of the Christian as hypocrite and judge. It's the person who says one thing in public and does something else in private. It's the person who uses the Word as a sledge hammer and beats people up with it every chance they get. Again, we like the first image and want to people to think of us that way. Chances are that we're somewhere in between and we don't want others to know just how close we are to the second than the first. Where you fall on that scale is directly proportional to your walk with Christ. The thing to remember is that God will use you no matter where you are: "When a mocker is punished, the simple gain wisdom; when a wise man is instructed, he gets knowledge." Proverbs 21:11 My father always told me, "You're always useful. Worst case is that you can serve as a bad example." God is saying the same thing here. You have a choice to be wise and learn from God's instruction or ignore it and someone else will be learning a lesson at your expense. Trust me, you don't want to serve as a bad example. It's nice to forget about work for a long stretch and enjoy the gifts God has given me. As I write this, I'm preparing to go back to my normal schedule and I think about what I will have to do to get up to speed again. Fortunately, for the kind of work I do, it comes back quickly. I think of professional athletes, though, that are coming back from injury or illness and they have a steeper hill to climb. Their instincts and reaction time need to be honed again. Even if their physical muscles haven't atrophied, their mental ones might have. You see it all the time as players who were at the top of the game before missing time look very average (or worse) for the first couple of weeks back. It takes a bit for them to find the groove and play like they did before. In some cases it can take quite a while. In others, it's never the same. That starts leading to conversations about "What if?" Just because we don't play professional sports doesn't mean we don't have to worry about the same thing. It's bad enough when you can't hit the same groove at work or in a relationship. It's worse when your spiritual muscles atrophy. The one you can least afford to stop exercising is love. "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." John 13:34-35 "Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves." Romans 12:10 "You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge sinful nature; rather, server one another in love." Galatians 5:13 You see love is not a feeling, it's an action. We are to love one another. And, I've discovered that if you stop loving one another, you'll forget how to do it right. The longer you avoid it, the harder it is to do it again. And, you'll be damaging relationships in the meantime. So, don't ever stop exercising your love. Love one another actively with the attitude of a servant. We even had snow falling while I was at work today. I've never been a sun worshipper and I love fall and winter weather. I like a good storm or being snowed in. My favorite thing to do during that kind of weather is make something hot to drink and start a fire. I can still remember my father teaching me how to start fires in the fireplace. Like most kids I was impressed with how quickly a wad of newspaper would burn. Throw three or four of them in there and you could have an impressive flame. But, it would only last a few seconds. Dad had to teach me that you needed a little of that fast flame to get the kindling going. Then you needed enough of the kindling going to get the base logs burning. Too much kindling, though, would stifle the fire. That meant being patient and watching some very unimpressive flames for a while. Of course, if you did it right and stuck it out, you'd get a healthy set of coals that could heat the house and make the evening perfect. The best was when we got some hardwood to burn rather than the usual pine. It was harder to get going, but it sure would burn a while and make for great coals. You could leave a decent log burning when you went to bed and you'd still have some hot coals in the morning. I'm reminded of the Parable of the Sower in Matthew 13. Jesus had to explain it to His disciples: "Listen to what the parable of the sower means: When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the path. The one who received the seed that feel on the rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away. The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful. But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown." Matthew 13:18-23 We don't want to be the believer that burns hot for God and impresses everyone, but falls away when our fuel is used up. We don't want to load on so much that we choke our belief. We want to feed the fire slowly, but surely. We want to be prepared to burn for many years to come. We want to produce more than what would could have without the fire being lit. She walked up and said hello and then told me that I should know that she and her husband were divorcing. I expressed my sympathy and offered to help in any way I could, but obviously there's not much to do now. It got me to thinking about how short-lived love seems to be for the average American. Even in my own life, I can think of many examples. I loved each of the pets we had growing up and was quite saddened when they died. I've moved on though, and I can't say that I have much emotion attached to them now. I dated girls in high school that I thought I loved. When we broke up I was despondent...for a week or two. Then I moved on. Now we see marriages where people "fall out of love". How discouraging is that? We can promise to be dedicated to each other forever in front of God and our families and friends, but then just stop when it gets too hard. How can you depend on that? I'm grateful that my parents are still married and love each other very much. I have a model to reference for long lasting love. I wonder how many kids are growing up now with no frame of reference at all? For them, love always has a timer attached. "Praise the Lord. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever." Psalm 106:1 "For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations." Psalm 100:5 There's the love we can depend on. There's the love that never fails. Not only should you lean on God's love, but you should be modeling it as well. I got better as I got older, but when you're young, it's tough. This is the idea of "money burning a hole in your pocket". Whenever I had more than twenty bucks assembled, I thought my head would explode if I didn't get to a toy store soon. There was a real, physical need to spend that money. I literally had a hard time sleeping and concentrating on anything else until I fulfilled my mission. Now, I frequently hadn't decided exactly what to buy, so when I finally got to a store, I would deliberate for quite a while. That's a whole other story. Are there other times in your life when something is so mentally or emotionally powerful that you must act? I had that experience while dating my wife. I had to tell her how I felt. When we were apart, I had to see her. I'm still that way now, but it's easier because I'm fairly confident she's not going to find someone else while I'm gone. Before we were married, I just craved spending time with her. I would annoy my friends and irritate my parents to do it. I had to. Jeremiah had a similar problem. He couldn't help but speak as the Lord led him: "Whenever I speak, I cry out proclaiming violence and destruction. So the word of the Lord has brought me insult and reproach all day long. But if I say, "I will not mention him or speak any more in his name," his word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot." Jeremiah 20:8-9 Wow. Jeremiah was so connected with God's will that God's words burned a hole in his bones. He had to speak out. He tried to stop because he was persecuted for what he prophesied, but he literally could not. Do God's words burn in you like that? Or is it easy to squelch them? Is it easy to keep quiet when someone speaks against Him or misrepresents Him? It shouldn't be easy. His words are truth. They should burn a hole. It's not an all- the-time thing, though, just every two years when the rhetoric really gets cranked up and you get glimpses of of the true colors behind so many red and blue ties. I am addicted to reading about polls, speeches, debates, and whatever else I can find during these last days. I've had election nights where I've held my head in my hands and wondered what the country was thinking. I've had other ones where I've cheered and had a spring in my step the next day. One thing I have never done, however, is advocate resisting or breaking the law just because someone I don't like is calling the shots. That tends not to be a problem in this country, although I'm hearing more of that kind of talk all the time from some quarters. The idea that you don't have to follow the leader you didn't vote for seems somewhat silly. As citizens of a republic, we have agreed to place those who have gathered a majority of votes into a leadership position. I may disagree with him or her, but I will continue to advocate peacefully for my point of view. In other parts of the world, disagreeing with an elected leader seems to mean you can not only ignore the laws and government they represent, but you are also allowed to start randomly killing people until you get your way. Those folks claim to be following their faith. I'm not so sure that's their real reason. I can say, though, that the reason I choose to peacefully submit to authority is because that's what Christ has directed: "Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God." Romans 13:1 I can talk and write and wave my arms, but when the votes are all counted, I need to submit to the authority. Now, that does not mean I have to stop talking about what's important. I don't have to agree with everything that authority says, but I do have to obey the laws (as long as they don't force me into sin). So, my encouragement for those of you who are junkies like me is to remember who's in charge. We may get the person we want in the Governor's mansion or the White House or we may get the person we really dislike. But, at the end of the day, God is the ultimate authority and, thankfully, we don't get to elect God. He just is. He has a hand in directing elections just like anything else. The only problem is that there is nobody there to pick them up. The camera pans back until this small team of guys is just a group of little dots in a very wide expanse of flat ocean. They seem very insignificant. The final line in the scene is, "So, should we wait or what?" God takes the "cradle to grave" approach. Of course, He gives us supernatural support and can provide for us and save us like nobody else can. John 14:2-3 God is providing us with all that we need here and with a path to eternal life. He's providing all that we need there, too. I guess that qualifies as "cradle to grave...and beyond". I believe we have a dual responsibility in regards to our government. First, we happen to live in a country where we get to vote. In too many places around the world, the will of the people is ignored and suppressed. Here, it is not. God has chosen to give us the ability to affect our society and how it is governed. We also have the wisdom granted by God to see His will and understand better how life was designed to work. A friend of mine pointed out how the intersection of these two ideas really drives us as Christians to be responsible voters. As such, I believe we have a responsibility to exercise our right to vote not only as a way of expressing our beliefs, but as an act of love for our fellow citizens. We should want them to have a better life, too, so we should vote to make it so. Secondly, we have a responsibility to provide spiritual support to our leaders. If I research a new software technology, I am more productive at work. These are all examples of how a payoff is based on the investment of time and effort. The fact is that there's always an effect from what you do or don't do. When you put in the right effort, the effect is good. When you slack off, neglect, or avoid the effort, the effect is less than expected or even bad. If I exercise, I stay healthy. If I drink and smoke, I don't. This law works spiritually, too. You cannot expect to live one way and then reap the results of your choice. God laid it out pretty clearly in Jeremiah: " 'Will you steal and murder, commit adultery and perjury, burn incense to Baal and follow other gods you have not known, and then come and stand before me in this house, which bears my Name, and say, "We are safe"-safe to do all these detestable things? Jeremiah 7:9-11 I don't know about you, but this seems to be precisely the message our society is selling. Do whatever you want. It doesn't matter, God loves you enough that he'll take you anyway as long as you meant well. Sure, God will save you from Hell. You will get to spend eternity with Him. Salvation does not remove the earthly effects of your earthly activities, though. If you engaged in risky behavior, you may still pay the price for that. If you committed a crime, you will still go to jail. It's the folks who try to laugh behind God's back, though, that amaze me. They really think He doesn't notice. "Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life." Galatians 6:7-8 That's as much a warning to us as it is to those who don't know Him. There are rules in play. It's good that we try to teach them to others, but we need to obey them ourselves, too. Capitalism is based on the idea that with an investment of money, time, effort, and a good idea, someone can increase the value of the investment. In the process, that person is producing a product that other people want and, at some point, maybe even providing a job for someone else. It's a great economic system that makes our country incredibly wealthy. Now, charity in this country only happens for two reasons: One, because the giver is simply generous and is really willing to share the bounty. Or, they just want the tax write-off. In a purely numerical sense, charity doesn't make sense. It's the giving away of assets for no material return. In another great example of how God's law turns man's law on its head, God's law of economics contradicts this logical result. Under God's law, charity makes all kinds of sense: "One man gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed." Proverbs 11:24-25 "Give, and it will be given to you. Luke 6:38 This is a law that defies math or logic. But, that's not new with God. I recommend all of those investment rules I mentioned above. They were pointing out how great they thought the coach was for giving one of his players a second chance. The player in question had just made a boneheaded move by shooting his mouth off to an opponent in front of the referee. The penalty caused this player's team to move fifteen yards back when they were very close to scoring. The cameras showed the coach chewing the player out mightily. He even yanked him back to the sideline when the player thought he should be going back in. Just when you thought the player in question would be riding the pines for the rest of the afternoon, the coach did something impressive. He called this player's number and gave him a shot at the touchdown. This showed great wisdom on the part of the coach. He knew that having this player do well was a much better outcome for the team. But, at the same time, the coach knew the player needed some discipline (hence the verbal barrage and being kept out of the next play). In the end, the coach wanted the player to do well, but he knew the player needed some discipline and a second chance. I love that God is the best coach around. No matter how many times I screw up, He picks me up, teaches me a new lesson, and sends me into the game again. As long as I'm willing to play under His guidance, He'll call a play for me now and then. When I decide that I don't want to play by His rules, He'll bench me until I change my mind. In the end, He wants what is best for us and wants us to be successful. Rahab had been a prostitute, but God gave her a second chance. Jonah literally tried to run from God, but God gave him a second chance. David got wrapped up in adultery and what was essentially contract murder, and yet God gave him a second chance. Paul had been persecuting the very people that followed Jesus and God gave him a second chance. "If you, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness; therefore you are feared." Psalm 130:3-4 When you blow it, just get back in the game. Listen carefully to the discipline and instruction. Adjust your game plan. Go battle hard for Him again. If you do all that, He will call your number again. The story goes that the guy you didn't want to meet in the dark woods would follow your trail and attempt to catch up to you. He was too slow to overtake you, though, so he would whistle. The trick was that he had the ability to make his whistle sound like it came from somewhere else. This guy would whistle such that it sounded like it was coming directly in front of you. This would cause you to turn around in fear and unknowingly head right towards him. Aside from creeping me out for a few years, this story does carry an important lesson. When you decide to change direction out of fear, frustration, disappointment, anger, or whatever, make sure you know where you are headed. Pay close attention to where the trouble is coming from and make sure you aren't headed directly at the source. I find that it's too common and far too easy to panic in these moments and let our human emotions and human logic take over. That usually results in changing direction directly away from the very place you should be headed. When life is beating you up, it doesn't make sense to flee God. And yet, how many times have we seen people do just that. They shake their fist at the sky and blame God for their troubles when they should be praying for His help. I know my habit when trouble comes is to think harder, work harder, and try harder. Those are great, but I usually forget to pray harder. In fact, I'll be doing the other things so much, I may pray less. I might as well be headed directly towards my enemy. That just accelerates my troubles. "Trouble and distress have come upon me, but your commands are my delight." Psalm 119:143 Listen carefully to where the trouble is coming from. Listen more carefully to where the help is coming from. Aside from the fact that we were on a party line and everyone on the line could listen to your conversations, we were always excited to hear from someone. Now, we have Caller ID and that allows us to screen our calls before we pick up the phone. I believe there is an analogy between Caller ID and our conscience. When God rings our number because of the way we have been living our lives, we are not very eager to pick up the phone. This brings us to another comparison: voice messaging. You see, in the old days, the darn phone would just keep ringing until someone hollered, "Will someone PLEASE answer the #$%! phone?" In my case, my conscience works like the old days. God calls and He doesn't stop ringing until I pick up. When I do, it feels like the whole world is listening. The answer, of course, is to not lead your life in such a manner that God decides to make such a call. Instead, when you feel you are headed in the wrong direction, you pick up the phone. "And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name." Acts 22:16 Number please. I felt so frustrated with questions where "there is no wrong answer". I wanted there to be a right answer and a clear, learnable way to find that answer. I liked algebra, trigonometry, calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, and all of the stuff in between because each problem had a right answer and a way to find it. Now, I spend my days writing code to tell computers what to do and then using logical analysis to find out where I went wrong. Think about that for a second. It never crosses my mind to blame the computer when the software doesn't work. When the computer doesn't do what I want it to do, I would love to blame it on some other software or some hardware glitch. 99.9 percent of the time, though, it's me. It's the code I wrote that's doing exactly what I told it to do, but not exactly what I wanted. I can never sit back, cross my arms, and declare that the computer is simply following my code incorrectly and I'm just going to wait until it figures that out. No, I have to start from the assumption that I screwed up. Isn't it amazing how many people try to pull that stunt with God? When things don't go the way they planned, they would prefer to redefine reality rather than admit their own culpability. "Nah, I did the right thing. God just isn't doing His part." or "The God I believe in wouldn't condemn my behavior. So, I'll continue and wait for my God to fix the problems." This is just ridiculous. When things go wrong, chances are it's because of something you did. God loves you and He'll help you through trouble, but He never promised to suspend consequences here on earth. "Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord," Acts 3:19 Don't bother waiting for God to turn to you when things are going sideways. What made this trip more interesting was the car in front of me. It was a pickup that had been modified to carry custom equipment for this guy's particular profession. After looking over the equipment for a few minutes, I finally figured out what he did. He installed gutters. I found his truck interesting because he didn't have stacks of stock size gutters in the back. He had a roll of flat aluminum. That roll fed into a machine that bent the sheet of aluminum to form the gutter and had a large hand bar on one side to cut it. I realized that he didn't order a whole stack of presized gutters only to have to cut them to size on site. He would go to a house, measure how much he needed and create a length of gutter that was the exact size. There's much less waste that way and the gutters probably looked better on the house when they are custom cut. My preconceived notion about what a gutter installer would do only proved that I knew very little about the process. It also reminded me of how we are specially selected for each job God has in mind. Despite what the world would have you believe, there is no such thing as cookie cutter Christians. We are not all the same. We do not all have the same abilities, the same desires, or even the same relationship with Christ. Humor is not always frivolous. It can be educational, too. So a guy decides to stick it out at his home despite the fact that the town is evacuating because of flooding. He fills sandbags to put around the doors and starts to move his valuables to the upper floor. As the water rises and eventually begins to overflow the sandbags, he realizes that he's in trouble. He prays like he's never prayed before for God to save him. The water continues to rise until his neighbors come by in a raft offering to get him to safety. "No thanks! God is going to save me!" A little while later when the water has moved up the stairs on the first floor, the police come by in a motor boat offering to help him out. "No thanks, guys. God is going to save me!" Eventually, the water has forced this guy out on to his roof and a helicopter flies over and drops a ladder. He calls up, "Don't worry about me. God is going to save me!" Finally, the water gets too high and sweeps the guy away and he drowns. When he gets to heaven he asks God, "What happened? I thought you were going to save me." God answers with an exasperated sigh, "What did you want? I sent you two boats and helicopter!" After the chuckle, listeners should also pick up on the idea that God doesn't always send thunder and lightning and an angel on a cloud to answer your prayer. Usually, he sends normal people at the right time and right place. It's easy to overlook them if you're looking for special effects and awe-inspiring moments. I imagine God being exasperated when I read this passage in Jeremiah: "From the time your forefathers left Egypt until now, day after day, again and again I sent you my servants the prophets. But they did not listen to me or pay attention. They were stiff-necked and did more evil than their forefathers." Jeremiah 7:25-26 You can almost hear God saying, "What do you want? I'm sending you people who are speaking My words. I am telling you exactly what to do." They didn't believe these prophets because they didn't want to. They would have only been impressed with thunder and lightning. They didn't listen to the normal looking guy who was by himself and saying things that nobody else said. Even though they knew in their hearts that the lone voice was telling the truth. Are you ignoring the apparently mundane and normal things in your life that my very well be answers to prayer or even corrections from God? Are you waiting for thunder and lightning, or are you willing to listen when the guy at the gas station says something that makes you think? Be ready to hear from God. Don't deny it when you do. Maybe it's the testosterone. Either way, I love a good debate. On the one hand, it's an intellectual exercise to outmaneuver your opponent with recollection of facts and mental skill. On the other, it's just a modern version of hand to hand combat...with less blood. You see, in a proper debate, one person will fail miserably if they lie or misdirect or resort to name- calling. In physical combat, you only have real strengths and skills. You cannot hide behind fake ones. This is why current political and cultural discourse is profoundly frustrating to me. Every time I've seen real debates held on the topics of the day, the truth becomes clear. But, what we see on TV and in the newspaper is not real debate. It is based on misdirection, deception, and flat out name-calling. Debate today is simply who can yell the loudest and who can elicit the most emotional response. It's all hand-waving and misdirection. It's fake. I'm a logical guy, so that drives me mad. I love to have honest debates about my faith. It's not because I have all the answers. It's because I know I'm arguing from a position of truth. If I cannot respond, then I know there's an answer in the Word. When debating from a position that is less tenuous, you run the risk of not having an answer. Your opponent may make a point that is just true and there's no getting around that. I take comfort in knowing that's not a problem for my faith. God has an answer to all those who argue against Him. The best part will be when the debate closes. Those arguing against Him will run out of counterpoints. They won't have any alternatives to offer. They'll just have to accept the truth. "The upright see and rejoice, but all the wicked shut their mouths." Psalm 107:42 "But the king will rejoice in God; all who swear by God's name will praise him, while the mouths of liars will be silenced." Psalm 63:11 Take confidence when defending your faith. On the one hand, we have the image of a multi-generational family around the table sharing a feast. It's an image that suggests tradition, the importance of family, and the power of love over whatever the world throws at you today. On the other hand, we have the image of slightly insane people in big coats with umbrellas lining up outside of Wal-Mart at 6 am for the chance to get a great price on a plasma television. We are told how retail businesses pull out all the stops to make money on the day after Thanksgiving by providing great prices on a few things in an attempt to get buyers in the store where they'll buy more things. It's an image of people being easily controlled by the idea of cheap stuff. The first image is flattering and the one we like to think of about ourselves. The second one is the one we like to laugh at. Chances are we're somewhere in between. There are dueling images of Christians as well. There's the image of a missionary bringing food to the hungry or helping to build a school somewhere in Africa. It's an image of the faithful who follow Jesus and live a pure life. There's also the image out there of the Christian as hypocrite and judge. It's the person who says one thing in public and does something else in private. It's the person who uses the Word as a sledge hammer and beats people up with it every chance they get. Again, we like the first image and want to people to think of us that way. Chances are that we're somewhere in between and we don't want others to know just how close we are to the second than the first. Where you fall on that scale is directly proportional to your walk with Christ. The thing to remember is that God will use you no matter where you are: "When a mocker is punished, the simple gain wisdom; when a wise man is instructed, he gets knowledge." Proverbs 21:11 My father always told me, "You're always useful. Worst case is that you can serve as a bad example." God is saying the same thing here. You have a choice to be wise and learn from God's instruction or ignore it and someone else will be learning a lesson at your expense. Trust me, you don't want to serve as a bad example. It's nice to forget about work for a long stretch and enjoy the gifts God has given me. As I write this, I'm preparing to go back to my normal schedule and I think about what I will have to do to get up to speed again. Fortunately, for the kind of work I do, it comes back quickly. I think of professional athletes, though, that are coming back from injury or illness and they have a steeper hill to climb. Their instincts and reaction time need to be honed again. Even if their physical muscles haven't atrophied, their mental ones might have. You see it all the time as players who were at the top of the game before missing time look very average (or worse) for the first couple of weeks back. It takes a bit for them to find the groove and play like they did before. In some cases it can take quite a while. In others, it's never the same. That starts leading to conversations about "What if?" Just because we don't play professional sports doesn't mean we don't have to worry about the same thing. It's bad enough when you can't hit the same groove at work or in a relationship. It's worse when your spiritual muscles atrophy. The one you can least afford to stop exercising is love. "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." John 13:34-35 "Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves." Romans 12:10 "You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge sinful nature; rather, server one another in love." Galatians 5:13 You see love is not a feeling, it's an action. We are to love one another. And, I've discovered that if you stop loving one another, you'll forget how to do it right. The longer you avoid it, the harder it is to do it again. And, you'll be damaging relationships in the meantime. So, don't ever stop exercising your love. Love one another actively with the attitude of a servant. Don't find yourself sitting around asking, "What if?" We even had snow falling while I was at work today. I've never been a sun worshipper and I love fall and winter weather. I like a good storm or being snowed in. My favorite thing to do during that kind of weather is make something hot to drink and start a fire. I can still remember my father teaching me how to start fires in the fireplace. Like most kids I was impressed with how quickly a wad of newspaper would burn. Throw three or four of them in there and you could have an impressive flame. But, it would only last a few seconds. Dad had to teach me that you needed a little of that fast flame to get the kindling going. Then you needed enough of the kindling going to get the base logs burning. Too much kindling, though, would stifle the fire. That meant being patient and watching some very unimpressive flames for a while. Of course, if you did it right and stuck it out, you'd get a healthy set of coals that could heat the house and make the evening perfect. The best was when we got some hardwood to burn rather than the usual pine. It was harder to get going, but it sure would burn a while and make for great coals. You could leave a decent log burning when you went to bed and you'd still have some hot coals in the morning. I'm reminded of the Parable of the Sower in Matthew 13. Jesus had to explain it to His disciples: "Listen to what the parable of the sower means: When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the path. The one who received the seed that feel on the rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away. The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful. But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown." Matthew 13:18-23 We don't want to be the believer that burns hot for God and impresses everyone, but falls away when our fuel is used up. We don't want to load on so much that we choke our belief. We want to feed the fire slowly, but surely. We want to be prepared to burn for many years to come. We want to produce more than what would could have without the fire being lit. Don't be a wad of newspaper. Be the oak log. Burn hot, burn long, and don't burn out. I expressed my sympathy and offered to help in any way I could, but obviously there's not much to do now. It got me to thinking about how short-lived love seems to be for the average American. Even in my own life, I can think of many examples. I loved each of the pets we had growing up and was quite saddened when they died. I've moved on though, and I can't say that I have much emotion attached to them now. I dated girls in high school that I thought I loved. When we broke up I was despondent...for a week or two. Then I moved on. Now we see marriages where people "fall out of love". How discouraging is that? We can promise to be dedicated to each other forever in front of God and our families and friends, but then just stop when it gets too hard. How can you depend on that? I'm grateful that my parents are still married and love each other very much. I have a model to reference for long lasting love. I wonder how many kids are growing up now with no frame of reference at all? For them, love always has a timer attached. "Praise the Lord. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever." Psalm 106:1 "For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations." Psalm 100:5 There's the love we can depend on. There's the love that never fails. Not only should you lean on God's love, but you should be modeling it as well. I got better as I got older, but when you're young, it's tough. This is the idea of "money burning a hole in your pocket". Whenever I had more than twenty bucks assembled, I thought my head would explode if I didn't get to a toy store soon. There was a real, physical need to spend that money. I literally had a hard time sleeping and concentrating on anything else until I fulfilled my mission. Now, I frequently hadn't decided exactly what to buy, so when I finally got to a store, I would deliberate for quite a while. That's a whole other story. Are there other times in your life when something is so mentally or emotionally powerful that you must act? I had that experience while dating my wife. I had to tell her how I felt. When we were apart, I had to see her. I'm still that way now, but it's easier because I'm fairly confident she's not going to find someone else while I'm gone. Before we were married, I just craved spending time with her. I would annoy my friends and irritate my parents to do it. I had to. Jeremiah had a similar problem. He couldn't help but speak as the Lord led him: "Whenever I speak, I cry out proclaiming violence and destruction. So the word of the Lord has brought me insult and reproach all day long. But if I say, "I will not mention him or speak any more in his name," his word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot." Jeremiah 20:8-9 Wow. Jeremiah was so connected with God's will that God's words burned a hole in his bones. He had to speak out. He tried to stop because he was persecuted for what he prophesied, but he literally could not. Do God's words burn in you like that? Or is it easy to squelch them? Is it easy to keep quiet when someone speaks against Him or misrepresents Him? It shouldn't be easy. His words are truth. They should burn a hole.
